Ixia Raises the Bar for Cellular Offload Testing

CALABASAS, CA, (October 18, 2011) – Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), a leading, global provider of converged network testing solutions, today announced the availability of an innovative testing methodology that redefines the process for evaluating Wi-Fi cellular offload. Ixia’s IxVeriWave validates true Wi-Fi service capacity and quality, as opposed to current solutions that are limited to simply checking network availability. By expanding beyond traditional site surveys, operators can now gauge and fine-tune Wi-Fi networks to deliver a much higher quality of experience (QoE) for end users.

Cellular offload introduces new demands well beyond those of traditional Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi access has been viewed as non-mission-critical, and the network often saw relatively light use. Historically, Wi-Fi operators have optimized for network “coverage,” rather than capacity and service quality. In modern offload networks, however, service providers are using Wi-Fi networks as an extension of their 3G/4G networks. Cellular offload demands that the Wi-Fi network deliver a satisfactory experience to many concurrent users in high-density, high-demand locations. In this environment, the Wi-Fi access network becomes a critical infrastructure element for the cellular network, and unsatisfactory user experiences on Wi-Fi can result in the loss of high-margin smartphone customers.

“Wi-Fi is now essential to the future success of cellular operators everywhere,” said Craig Matthias, a Principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. “Site surveys yield little useful information beyond coverage alone. Test and verification solutions like Ixia’s IxVeriWave are essential in fully understanding the capacity of carrier Wi-Fi networks and the QoE experienced by customers. Today, it’s all about capacity, which is truly the key to success.”

Ixia’s IxVeriWave is designed to test wireless LAN networks using a client-centric model. This approach delivers repeatable, large-scale, real-world test scenarios that are virtually impossible to create by any other means. By emulating large numbers of clients, traffic mixes, and Wi-Fi-connected devices rather than rolling hundreds of devices on carts, IxVeriWave's functional and performance analysis system reduces test cycles from months to days and delivers value unobtainable in any other alternative. As a result, IxVeriWave offers efficiency gains and cost reductions, along with the capability to identify problems early in development and QA cycles.

Ixia has developed a standardized methodology for testing Wi-Fi, outlined in Cellular Offload: Site Deployment Best Practices Guide. This comprehensive guide defines key principles and best practices for testing next-generation Wi-Fi deployments, including:

Using application traffic in addition to signal strength as measurement sources
Reporting customer satisfaction metrics
Using the same high-value client devices as network users
Testing network scalability prior to heavy usage at events
Isolating client behavior from network behavior
“Ixia’s Wi-Fi solution improves the customer experience by maximizing the capacity and performance of Wi-Fi cellular offload, while simultaneously lowering the cost to deliver data for the service provider,” said Joe Zeto, senior manager, marketing development at Ixia. “IxVeriWave introduces a new testing paradigm that highlights not just Wi-Fi availability, but service quality that affects users’ experience.”

CommScope Supplies Active Antennas in North American 4G Network Trial

HICKORY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CommScope Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, has supplied the first active antennas in use in an LTE network field trial, a major step toward the promise of better, more cost effective ways to transmit broadband signals to mobile customers using next generation networks.

CommScope’s new active antennas, part of the company’s expanding portfolio of solutions for 4G wireless networks, are installed as part of a multi-site LTE trial being conducted by a prominent North American wireless network operator. Active antennas are considered the next stage in the evolution of cellular site architecture, in which the radio is integrated into the antenna and the radio functionality is distributed across the antenna elements. This digital architecture reduces the need for certain cell site equipment, which can reduce energy consumption, site maintenance and leasing costs.

“We believe this trial is a significant step toward the eventual wide-spread deployment of active antenna solutions in LTE networks,” said Kevin Linehan, vice president and chief technology officer for base station antennas, CommScope. “Through our 10-plus years of pioneering research and development on active antenna systems, combined with our vast experience in designing and developing advanced antenna and remote radio head systems for global operators, we think CommScope is uniquely positioned to help wireless operators experience the many benefits of the world’s first digital, antenna-integrated radio system.”

The CommScope antennas, featuring breakthrough antenna-embedded radio technology developed with technology partner Ubidyne, are designed to enable mobile operators to deliver optimal wireless coverage and quality of service to subscribers while reducing capital expense and operating expense. It is offered in single-mode or multi-mode configuration, with two to six fibers per component, offering built-in redundancy.

“CommScope has invested more than $1 billion in research and development over the past decade in order to help customers evolve to new technologies,” Linehan said. “Our active antenna and fiber feeder solutions are examples of how that investment results in valuable intellectual property and delivers tremendous benefits to our customers and the industry.”

BT One Voice Anywhere Launches in US Market

BT One Voice Anywhere Launches in US Market

GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo, Orlando, FL., October 18, 2011 – BT today announced the availability in the U.S. of BT One Voice anywhere, its next generation voice application service. The service offers flexibility for global travelling employees by allowing them to take their telephony with them via a softphone and use speech to text voicemail translation. In addition, One Voice anywhere helps to significantly reduce spend on mobile roaming costs through access to the corporate virtual private network (VPN). BT made this announcement from Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2011, where it will be demonstrating One Voice anywhere and other products and services from the BT global portfolio at Booth #515 in the Enterprise Networking/Communications Pavilion.

Voice is a significant cost for businesses in an environment where expenses are being looked at under a microscope and there is continuous pressure to contain or reduce costs and find savings.

BT One Voice anywhere couples technology from the acquisition of Ribbit with the One Voice global VPN service, extending the benefits of the VPN to users anywhere, using any device, including SIP phones. This delivers unified communications and collaboration (UCC) capabilities to all users regardless of legacy environment and can help significantly reduce call charges, with even more cost savings for roaming charges.

Using the BT One Voice VPN, One Voice anywhere helps reduce mobile spend for businesses with employees who travel internationally by extending organizations’ phone networks. Users set up their preferences so when a call is received, it is routed over the One Voice VPN network, saving toll costs from local service providers or mobile roaming fees. For example, if an employee is travelling, instead of receiving a call on their mobile phone, which can incur significant roaming charges, they can set up their preferences to take the call on a softphone or a landline of their choosing.

“Mobile phones and smartphones are increasingly used for business voice calls. Costs can increase because businesses are charged as employees roam, retrieve voicemails and accept incoming calls, especially for international travellers,” said Neil Sutton, vice president, Portfolio, BT Global Services. “One Voice anywhere can help reduce voice costs for our One Voice customers.”

One Voice anywhere can integrate with new IP based platforms as well as older TDM systems and allows a transparent, feature rich, fully managed and integrated UCC environment. This helps leverage existing investments and drives down additional costs. In addition, One Voice anywhere is delivered from the cloud, and is embedded in the enterprise grade VPN solution, so there are no heavy upfront investments or on premise equipment required.

Mobile Marketing Association releases new privacy policy guidelines for mobile-apps for public comment

New York, NY, 17 October, 2011 – The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), the leading global trade association for the mobile industry, today announced the release of the MMA Mobile Application Privacy Policy, the first guidelines document of its kind that addresses the core privacy issues and data processes of many mobile applications, for public comment.

“These new privacy policy guidelines fill an urgent need for all companies doing business in the mobile marketing industry. The guidelines are intended to provide ways to give the mobile application developer with clear and transparent policy language that can be quickly and completely understood by the consumer,” said MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart. “Today’s release is the first in series of privacy policy guidelines that the MMA will create with the input of industry leaders across the mobile ecosystem.”
The guidelines address key issues including:

Annotated guidance on core privacy principles and consumer-friendly language for developers to consider using.

- Ways to inform users on how data is obtained and used
- Guidance on security and confidentiality of information

Privacy policies are an important consumer disclosure tool for app developers; not meant to be a one-size-fits-all document and should be customized to fit the needs of each company and each jurisdiction. The MMA urges app developers to consult with their legal counsel when adapting these guidelines for their purposes.

“Having a privacy policy is a good first step, compliance and supporting processes are also very important,” said Alan Chapell, Co-chair of the MMA Privacy & Advocacy Committee. “With more than 58% of U.S. mobile users worried that their data can be easily accessed by others, a privacy policy that helps establish and maintain consumer trust is absolutely essential.”

The MMA Mobile Application Privacy Policy was created by the MMA Privacy & Advocacy Committee -- co-chaired by Alan Chapell, President of Chapell & Associates, and Fran Maier, President of TRUSTe -- in response to the massive upsurge in mobile app popularity among smartphone users and mobile marketers. There are now billions of apps downloaded per year; as of June 2011, over 425,000 individual apps were available via the Apple App Store and more than 200,000 were available for Android devices.
