Ixia Raises the Bar for Cellular Offload Testing

CALABASAS, CA, (October 18, 2011) – Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), a leading, global provider of converged network testing solutions, today announced the availability of an innovative testing methodology that redefines the process for evaluating Wi-Fi cellular offload. Ixia’s IxVeriWave validates true Wi-Fi service capacity and quality, as opposed to current solutions that are limited to simply checking network availability. By expanding beyond traditional site surveys, operators can now gauge and fine-tune Wi-Fi networks to deliver a much higher quality of experience (QoE) for end users.

Cellular offload introduces new demands well beyond those of traditional Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi access has been viewed as non-mission-critical, and the network often saw relatively light use. Historically, Wi-Fi operators have optimized for network “coverage,” rather than capacity and service quality. In modern offload networks, however, service providers are using Wi-Fi networks as an extension of their 3G/4G networks. Cellular offload demands that the Wi-Fi network deliver a satisfactory experience to many concurrent users in high-density, high-demand locations. In this environment, the Wi-Fi access network becomes a critical infrastructure element for the cellular network, and unsatisfactory user experiences on Wi-Fi can result in the loss of high-margin smartphone customers.

“Wi-Fi is now essential to the future success of cellular operators everywhere,” said Craig Matthias, a Principal with the wireless and mobile advisory firm Farpoint Group. “Site surveys yield little useful information beyond coverage alone. Test and verification solutions like Ixia’s IxVeriWave are essential in fully understanding the capacity of carrier Wi-Fi networks and the QoE experienced by customers. Today, it’s all about capacity, which is truly the key to success.”

Ixia’s IxVeriWave is designed to test wireless LAN networks using a client-centric model. This approach delivers repeatable, large-scale, real-world test scenarios that are virtually impossible to create by any other means. By emulating large numbers of clients, traffic mixes, and Wi-Fi-connected devices rather than rolling hundreds of devices on carts, IxVeriWave's functional and performance analysis system reduces test cycles from months to days and delivers value unobtainable in any other alternative. As a result, IxVeriWave offers efficiency gains and cost reductions, along with the capability to identify problems early in development and QA cycles.

Ixia has developed a standardized methodology for testing Wi-Fi, outlined in Cellular Offload: Site Deployment Best Practices Guide. This comprehensive guide defines key principles and best practices for testing next-generation Wi-Fi deployments, including:

Using application traffic in addition to signal strength as measurement sources
Reporting customer satisfaction metrics
Using the same high-value client devices as network users
Testing network scalability prior to heavy usage at events
Isolating client behavior from network behavior
“Ixia’s Wi-Fi solution improves the customer experience by maximizing the capacity and performance of Wi-Fi cellular offload, while simultaneously lowering the cost to deliver data for the service provider,” said Joe Zeto, senior manager, marketing development at Ixia. “IxVeriWave introduces a new testing paradigm that highlights not just Wi-Fi availability, but service quality that affects users’ experience.”

BT One Voice Anywhere Launches in US Market

BT One Voice Anywhere Launches in US Market

GARTNER SYMPOSIUM/ITxpo, Orlando, FL., October 18, 2011 – BT today announced the availability in the U.S. of BT One Voice anywhere, its next generation voice application service. The service offers flexibility for global travelling employees by allowing them to take their telephony with them via a softphone and use speech to text voicemail translation. In addition, One Voice anywhere helps to significantly reduce spend on mobile roaming costs through access to the corporate virtual private network (VPN). BT made this announcement from Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2011, where it will be demonstrating One Voice anywhere and other products and services from the BT global portfolio at Booth #515 in the Enterprise Networking/Communications Pavilion.

Voice is a significant cost for businesses in an environment where expenses are being looked at under a microscope and there is continuous pressure to contain or reduce costs and find savings.

BT One Voice anywhere couples technology from the acquisition of Ribbit with the One Voice global VPN service, extending the benefits of the VPN to users anywhere, using any device, including SIP phones. This delivers unified communications and collaboration (UCC) capabilities to all users regardless of legacy environment and can help significantly reduce call charges, with even more cost savings for roaming charges.

Using the BT One Voice VPN, One Voice anywhere helps reduce mobile spend for businesses with employees who travel internationally by extending organizations’ phone networks. Users set up their preferences so when a call is received, it is routed over the One Voice VPN network, saving toll costs from local service providers or mobile roaming fees. For example, if an employee is travelling, instead of receiving a call on their mobile phone, which can incur significant roaming charges, they can set up their preferences to take the call on a softphone or a landline of their choosing.

“Mobile phones and smartphones are increasingly used for business voice calls. Costs can increase because businesses are charged as employees roam, retrieve voicemails and accept incoming calls, especially for international travellers,” said Neil Sutton, vice president, Portfolio, BT Global Services. “One Voice anywhere can help reduce voice costs for our One Voice customers.”

One Voice anywhere can integrate with new IP based platforms as well as older TDM systems and allows a transparent, feature rich, fully managed and integrated UCC environment. This helps leverage existing investments and drives down additional costs. In addition, One Voice anywhere is delivered from the cloud, and is embedded in the enterprise grade VPN solution, so there are no heavy upfront investments or on premise equipment required.

Mobile Marketing Association releases new privacy policy guidelines for mobile-apps for public comment

New York, NY, 17 October, 2011 – The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), the leading global trade association for the mobile industry, today announced the release of the MMA Mobile Application Privacy Policy, the first guidelines document of its kind that addresses the core privacy issues and data processes of many mobile applications, for public comment.

“These new privacy policy guidelines fill an urgent need for all companies doing business in the mobile marketing industry. The guidelines are intended to provide ways to give the mobile application developer with clear and transparent policy language that can be quickly and completely understood by the consumer,” said MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart. “Today’s release is the first in series of privacy policy guidelines that the MMA will create with the input of industry leaders across the mobile ecosystem.”
The guidelines address key issues including:

Annotated guidance on core privacy principles and consumer-friendly language for developers to consider using.

- Ways to inform users on how data is obtained and used
- Guidance on security and confidentiality of information

Privacy policies are an important consumer disclosure tool for app developers; not meant to be a one-size-fits-all document and should be customized to fit the needs of each company and each jurisdiction. The MMA urges app developers to consult with their legal counsel when adapting these guidelines for their purposes.

“Having a privacy policy is a good first step, compliance and supporting processes are also very important,” said Alan Chapell, Co-chair of the MMA Privacy & Advocacy Committee. “With more than 58% of U.S. mobile users worried that their data can be easily accessed by others, a privacy policy that helps establish and maintain consumer trust is absolutely essential.”

Echoworx and Avema partner to support encryption on mobile devices

Echoworx and Avema partner to support encryption on mobile devices

Atlanta, GA, October 13, 2011 –Echoworx, a leading provider of credential management and managed encryption services for complete email and data protection is pleased to announce a new reseller partnership with Avema Corporation, a global provider of telecom and wireless cost optimization services. Under the terms of the agreement, Avema will be adding Echoworx’ recently launched mobilEncrypt Endpoint solutions for mobile to its mobile device management (MDM) offerings.

According to Michael Ginsberg, Chief Executive Officer for Echoworx, “Mobile security has become a major focus as organizations try to secure the explosive growth of corporate information being accessed by mobile device users. To that end, email encryption and credential management for mobile have presented significant challenges for IT managers. mobilEncrypt ENDPOINT is the only solution that works natively with devices to deliver easy-to-use encryption and credential management capabilities. As a leader in providing MDM solution sets, Avema is the ideal partner for Echoworx as they are experts in creating offerings that close the mobile security ‘loopholes’ plaguing IT managers today.”

Roger Yang, Chief Executive Officer for Avema Corporation sees the Echoworx platform as a significant value-add for its customers. “The classic problem for customers is the segmentation in mobile device usage, which makes it difficult to come up with a single MDM system that fits all user needs. Our role is to create MDM solutions that meet their business security needs through the integration of best of breed technology. That’s exactly where Echoworx makes perfect sense, because its encryption application can be downloaded and activated without having to retrofit devices or go through complex setups; and organizations can easily restrict corporate access to authorized users only. It’s good to know that with Echoworx, we are partnering with a future-thinking company.”

With mobilEncrypt ENDPOINT, iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry users can compose, send, download and receive secure, encrypted messages through their existing business email account. No additional components are required, since the application creates a native email experience. IT managers for their part can centrally manage the infrastructure “over-the-air” and assign user credentials, as well as revoke or suspend them if a device gets lost or stolen. The solution is backed by a comprehensive public key infrastructure (PKI) credential management platform and globally recognized Certificate Authority. An Android version is scheduled for release this fall.

Mobeam Delivers Redemption on Smartphones

Mobeam Delivers Redemption on Smartphones

CUPERTINO, Calif. and SAN DIEGO from CTIA Enterprise & Apps – October 12, 2011 – Mobeam® (www.mobeam.com) today announced its light based communications (LBC) technology is now available to mobile handset manufacturers for easy integration on new smartphone devices. Mobeam’s patented LBC technology removes the technical barrier that limits smartphone applications for mobile coupons, gift cards and tickets. By leveraging the light emitting sources that smartphones already use for other purposes – message waiting and battery charging indicators, proximity sensors, camera flashes, among others – mobeam technology can beam a barcode that works virtually anywhere.

“Because no phones today can reliably display a scanable barcode that existing retail point of sale technology can ‘see,’ a major gap in mobile commerce has emerged,” said Brian Kang, director of investment for of Samsung Ventures. “To fix this problem, the mobile commerce ecosystem has two choices: either retailers can replace their point of sale infrastructure with new scanners that can read existing smartphones, or smartphone OEMs can find a way to make their devices work with the widespread existing technology in use the world over. With an inexpensive firmware solution that won’t change the physical designs of phones, mobeam is delivering the fastest path to universally available digital commerce.”

Mobeam technology converts barcodes, just like the ones used on every item sold in retail stores as well as the more than 300 billion coupons distributed every year, into a beam of light that can be read by every one of the estimated 165 million red laser barcode scanners already found at point of sale in stores all around the world. With it, traditional barcode information is “mobeamed” to the laser scanner directly from a mobile phone, with no new equipment required whatsoever by the retailer and no new design elements required by the handset manufacturer. With mobeam enabled smartphones, mobile coupons can at last become a reality, with easy coupon redemption at virtually every POS.

For handset manufacturers, embedding mobeam is simple and quick. Mobeam APIs are added to the firmware, allowing mobeam technology to utilize the LED light sources already planned for the device. These embedded APIs also allow application developers to create apps that leverage mobeam. Because mobeam requires no changes to handset component technology, it adds no incremental cost to the manufacturing of the handset. Mobeam works with any LEDs used in phones, including infrared LEDs often used with proximity sensors.

-This advancement promises to transform the traditional coupon redemption, gift card, loyalty and ticket services that have yet to fully break into mobile, and as a result have been consigned to antiquated paper based formats. Just as smartphone use is transforming banking and payments, mobile and digital formats will bring important new innovations to these services impacting every link in the value chain including consumers, CPG manufacturers, retailers, handset makers and mobile operators.

CommScope Launches Global Energy Conservation Initiative for Wireless Industry

CommScope Launches Global Energy Conservation Initiative for Wireless Industry

As wireless networking companies push to become more environmentally friendly, CommScope, Inc., a global leader in infrastructure solutions for communications networks, has launched an energy conservation initiative that supports the industry’s global efforts in reducing power consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs.

“There’s no doubt that advanced technology and communications have impacted the way people live, work and play,” said Anil Trehan, vice president, Energy Solutions, CommScope. “As the demand for better, faster services increases, the industry must also focus on how to reduce its network power and fossil fuel consumption, greenhouse emissions, operating costs and capital expenditures. Taking all these factors into consideration, CommScope’s new initiative helps wireless operators lower their energy costs and provides them with an innovative and reliable way of powering cell sites. It also helps operators lessen their impact on the environment.”

It is estimated that the operation of telecommunications networks is responsible for 0.5 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. With the wireless industry’s heightened awareness of their networks’ environmental impact, operators are seeking ways to rapidly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner environment by reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are being blamed as one of the potential causes of global climate change. This is why many operators have set goals to reduce their energy consumption by approximately 25 percent within the next 10 years.

“By partnering with CommScope, wireless operators have the ability to save an average of $5,000 per site, per year on energy consumption,” Trehan said. “In a 100-site network, that is an annual savings of $500,000. With more than one million cell sites around the world, operators can make significant reductions to their energy costs.”

To achieve many of these “green” goals, wireless operators can invest in clean and reliable backup power generators, remote shelter monitoring, amplifier upgrades, shelter cooling and hybrid cooling systems through CommScope’s new initiative.

Mobeam Closes Initial Venture Round

CUPERTINO, Calif. – October 3, 2011 – Mobeam, inc. (www.mobeam.com) announced today that it has closed a $4.9 million Series A venture round, receiving funding from yet2Ventures, Samsung Ventures and Mitsui, together with other independent investors. Mobeam’s patented technology overcomes the technical barrier preventing mobile phones from interacting with the laser scanners used at retail locations around the world. Funds from this multimillion dollar funding round will be used to establish mobeam’s light based communications (LBC) technology as a new industry standard allowing mobile phones to interact with point of sale (POS) technology. Mobeam is also using these new funds to accelerate business development efforts with major consumer and retail brands for mobile couponing and other broad mobile commerce initiatives.

“Laser scanners are used in all major retail locations throughout the world, yet no current mobile technology can communicate with them, except for mobeam,” said Ben duPont, general partner of yet2Ventures. “Increasingly, mobile phones are the centerpiece of everyone’s daily lives, but in order to deliver a complete digital commerce experience they must communicate universally with scanners at point of sale. That’s the beauty of mobeam; ‘mobeaming’ a barcode works accurately and reliably every time, and it makes the technologies retailers already have far more useful while adding a new layer of intelligence gathering for retailers and brands.”

Due to the way mobile handset screens are constructed, even the most vibrantly displayed barcode cannot be read by the commonly used laser scanners found at point of sale in most retailers. Mobeam technology affordably adapts existing mobile technology to already deployed retail POS infrastructure, opening the door to a wide range of previously impossible mobile commerce programs and services.

Mobeam’s patented light based communication (LBC) technology utilizes LED technology already used on the vast majority of handsets to transform barcodes into a beam of light that every laser scanner can read. This technology makes it possible, for the first time, for a phone to present a coupon that can be easily and conveniently scanned and redeemed, without the need for retailers to upgrade their technology. Beyond mobile couponing, mobeam’s technology brings applications such as mobile ticketing and other mobile content enabled services to the next level.

“Mobeam’s technology addresses virtually every POS environment,” said Chris Sellers, CEO of mobeam. “Not only is mobeam the only way to use light to interact with a laser scanner, our technology can also simultaneously display 2D images and initiate NFC transmission, making it possible for retailers, brands and device manufacturers to rethink mobile commerce. Mobeam is solving a significant problem for consumers, brands, retailers and every other player along the retail value chain. The potential for mobeam’s light based communications technology – from mobile couponing to ticketing to mobile content – promises to be a tremendous industry game changer.”

RIM and Tech Data Announce Distribution Agreement for BlackBerry Solutions Targeted at Small to Mid-Sized Businesses in the U.S.

Waterloo, Ontario and Clearwater, Florida – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) and Tech Data Corporation (NASDAQ: TECD) today announced a new agreement that enables Tech Data to distribute BlackBerry® devices, software and technical support services to its channel of over 60,000 value-added resellers in the United States. The agreement also allows Tech Data to support the end-to-end sale of BlackBerry solutions for small to mid-sized businesses through Tech Data’s new TDMobility offering operated by ActivateIT, a Tech Data and Brightstar Corp. joint venture company.

“This agreement opens up new channels for BlackBerry solutions targeted at small to mid-sized businesses in the U.S.,” said Derek Peper, Vice President, Enterprise Sales and Strategic Partnerships at Research In Motion. “RIM is also pleased to support the innovative TDMobility offering through this new relationship with Tech Data – an offering that supports the end-to-end sale of BlackBerry solutions, from devices and software through to training and technical support. This is a great win for RIM, Tech Data, Brightstar, the reseller community, our carrier partners and, most importantly, our business customers.”

“RIM is a strategic vendor partner for our launch of TDMobility into the channel, and ActivateIT is key to making the complete solution possible,” said Joe Quaglia, Senior Vice President of U.S. Marketing at Tech Data. “We formed a strategic alliance with Brightstar to enable just this kind of offering and we’re excited to offer our reseller customers the opportunity to increase their footprint in the channel by making complete, end-to-end BlackBerry solutions more easily available.”

“We’re always looking at the best way to serve our customers,” said Charles Kriete, President of ActivateIT. “Understanding what the marketplace needs is important, but it is our relationship with both RIM and Tech Data that is making this solution possible.”

Pervasip Releases Android Internet Calling App To The Google Android Market

Pervasip's wholly owned subsidiary, VoX Communications, a leading provider of wholesale Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone services and cloud based computing, has announced that it has launched a mobile VoIP app for use on all Android mobile phones and Android tablets.

Pervasip's Chief Information Officer, Mark Richards, noted, "We are very excited about delivering a mobile VoIP app via Google's incredibly popular Android Market. We believe that this venue will give us significant exposure, as this app will be available to over 100 million Android smart phones globally and provide unlimited calls and text to other VoX users globally for as little as $4.95 a month."

A VoX subscriber can subscribe entirely on the phone and choose a U.S. phone number without leaving the interface, which makes the sign up process more elegant than many competitors. The mobile VoIP plans start at $4.95, which is a low cost of entry for a high quality and reliable VoIP service offering. VoX also offers 500 minutes for $9.95, and $29.95 for unlimited calling to the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

Richards continued, "The application is very sophisticated and has some interesting features that give us an advantage over other VoIP apps. For instance, VoX becomes available in the phone's primary dialer with a single touch and you do not have to sign in every time, as the Skype app requires. With our app you can also set it to automatically register with VoX when Wi-Fi is turned on, or keep it registered for 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi. We believe that we can add video calling to this product by the end of the year. This enhancement will enable video calling between an Android phone and an Ojo Vision video phone. As a nimble development technology company, we intend to produce a tablet video app that brings superior video calling to the Android Market."

"We have the ability to easily update plans offered, and we intend to be creative with target audiences that are looking for fixed blocks of calls for a fixed dollar amount rather than charging a monthly fee for services that people don't always use. This new interface enables us to tailor the plans offered so that we could even offer a $1 plan that only depletes a consumer's cash balance when calls are made. We intend to offer similar creative calling plans to those offered recently by Vonage and also intend to offer them at competitive prices," added Richards.

MobileIron Selects GroupLogic as Mobile File Management Partner for New MobileIron AppConnect Platform

MobileIron Selects GroupLogic as Mobile File Management Partner for New MobileIron AppConnect Platform

Arlington, VA and Mountain View, CA - September 28, 2011 - GroupLogic, the industry's leading provider of software products that unlock the power of new enterprise platforms, and MobileIron, the innovator in enterprise management and security for mobile devices and apps, today announced the two companies have entered a strategic co-development, marketing and sales partnership that will enable MobileIron customers to run GroupLogic's mobile file management (MFM) software, mobilEcho within MobileIron's advanced mobile device management (MDM) framework.

News of the relationship follows today's announcement by MobileIron introducing MobileIron AppConnect, the best way for enterprises to secure mobile applications. Using MobileIron AppConnect, enterprises can secure company data across the lifecycle of their mobile apps, from deployment to usage to retirement. The MobileIron AppConnect APIs will be available first to a select few value-added application partners that will integrate their apps with MobileIron's security platform. One of the first partners to receive access to the new platform, GroupLogic will work closely with MobileIron's team to ensure that mobilEcho runs simply and securely within the MobileIron device and app management infrastructure.

As new devices come to market and more enterprises are embracing the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) to work trend, enterprise IT organizations increasingly require infrastructure that enables the deployment and management of thousands of devices and applications that run on those devices in a simple and secure manner. In addition, the inherent corporate security risks of mobile business computing on multiple devices make mobile file sharing and IT management difficult for enterprises concerned with ensuring compliance and security standards are met.

"With the proliferation of mobile devices and skyrocketing adoption rates, both mobile device management and mobile file management are absolute requirements for enterprise IT organizations that want to maintain security and reduce management time and costs," said Ojas Rege, VP of Product, MobileIron. "We are very pleased to be working closely with GroupLogic. We believe that our current and future customers will benefit greatly from having integrated access to two extremely complementary technologies: mobile file management and mobile device management."

"We are pleased to partner with MobileIron and to be called out as a leading mobile file management provider in the short list of first partners with access to AppConnect," said Todd While, Vice President, Mobility Solutions, GroupLogic. "For any enterprise that currently has a mobile device management strategy, mobile file management is a necessity-working with MobileIron makes securing both mobile file sharing and all corporate-owned and employee-owned devices simple and easy to manage."

mobilEcho enables enterprise IT organizations to provide secure and managed corporate file access for enterprise mobile device users, based on existing security and access control policies. Until the release of mobilEcho, enterprise mobile device users had no choice but to use inherently flawed and unsecure work-arounds to access files on mobile devices, including emailing files to themselves or uploading enterprise files into unsecured consumer-based synching services, violating corporate security, governance and compliance policies. mobilEcho addresses this problem by enabling enterprise IT organizations to rapidly install and provide simple, secure and managed Mobile File Management for corporate mobile users.

mobilEcho is the only Mobile File Management system available that:

Can be centrally managed by IT;
Connects directly and securely to enterprise file servers;
Enables IT to deploy and configure corporate-wide mobile file access in minutes;
Provides on-device browsing and storage of corporate files in a secure environment, filling the need left by the lack of a native iPad file system on iPad or other mobile computing platforms;
Ensures mobile file access integrates with existing Active Directory permissions; and,
Provides IT organizations with enterprise-ready software for integrating corporate- and employee-owned iPads into the enterprise ecosystem.
mobilEcho can be purchased via the GroupLogic web store at http://www.grouplogic.com/store/). Interested IT organizations can also take advantage of GroupLogic's free trial of mobilEcho by visiting: www.grouplogic.com/enterprise-file-sharing/ipad-file-system/free-trial.html. GroupLogic offers two pricing options for enterprises, including subscription and perpetual licensing.
